Mexico had a dream group stage in the 2026 World Cup but now must avoid a nightmare knockout round, drawing a difficult round of 32 contest against Ecuador. El Tri was able to win all three of its matches, enjoying home-field advantage and confirming it would stay in Mexico City for this match by winning the group.

Even with manager Javier Aguirre resting most of his starters in the group finale against Czechia, Mexico was able to dominate the European side, winning 3-0 with goals from Mateo Chavez, Julian Quiones and Alvaro Fidalgo. The top players - Quiones and Fidalgo among them - will return to the starting XI with no margin for error for Mexico.

Ecuador was picked by many to be a dark horse but after 85 strong minutes La Tri conceded to Ivory Coast and lost. Against tiny Curacao, Ecuador simply couldnt finish its chances and settled for an infamous 0-0 draw. But after the final day of the group stage started poorly, conceding early to Germany, Nelson Angulo and Gonzalo Plata found the back of the net for a 2-1 win that kept Ecuador alive. Sebastin Beccaceces squad needs to continue that performance and get finishing, be it from the scorers against Germany, forward Enner Valencia or elsewhere.

Ecuador also is sweating the fitness of Arsenal defender Piero Hincapie, who left the Germany game in the second half with a muscle injury, though Pervis Estupin is a natural replacement should he be unable to go. The crowd will be supporting Mexico and hoping the dream continues, even as Ecuador looks to once again leave Mexico waiting for el quinto partido - the fifth match at a World Cup.

Mexico vs Ecuador predictions

Seth Vertelney: Mexico 1-0 Ecuador

This is a terrible draw for Mexico as a group winner. But El Tri should have enough at home against a team that has been goal-shy for much of this tournament.

Jon Arnold: Mexico 1-0 Ecuador

It's a brutal 'reward' for Mexico after a perfect group stage, but while Ecuador is a tough team El Tri can play its game and get through thanks to a set-piece strike.

Jesse Yomtov: Mexico 1 - 0 Ecuador (extra time)

If this wasn't being played at the Azteca, I'd probably be taking Ecuador but El Tri will get its long-awaited knockout round win.

Victoria Hernandez: Mexico 2 - 0 Ecuador

Mexico is the only team that won all three of its group stage matches and gave Memo Ochoa an emotional farewell. They will be riding high to keep their World Cup going.
