Paraguay declares national holiday after stunning World Cup upset vs Germany

There will be no work done in Paraguay on Tuesday, June 30.

That probably would've been the case anyway after the Albirroja's win over Germany to move into the round of 16 for the first time since 2002, but now it's official.

Paraguay president Santiago Peña declared the off day with a slightly swear-y tweet, saying "Paraguay never gives up! Public holiday, damn it!"

Paraguayan law allows the executive branch to declare three additional public holidays a year.

Peña also declared a public holiday in September 2025 after the national team secured its first return to a World Cup since the 2010 tournament in South Africa.

Paraguay scored the opener in the match against the favored European side thanks to Julio Enciso but saw Kai Havertz bring Germany level in the second half. After a Germany goal scored in extra time was called back because of a foul spotted during video review, Paraguay was able to get to the shootout and win the contest.

Goalkeeper Orlando Gill made six stops in regulation time, then stopped two penalty kicks to assist the cause.

The team will look to make the president nervous about how many holidays he has left at his disposal but has a tough test in a round of 16 match against the winner of France's game with Sweden.
