Extreme heat warning in Texas. Here's how hot it will get

Texans dealing with lingering flood impacts from former Tropical Storm Arthur may soon have another concern: dangerous heat.

Feels-like temperatures are expected to soar up to 120 degrees in parts of Texas on Thursday, June 18, triggering extreme heat warnings and advisories in several parts of the state, according to the National Weather Service.

Extreme heat warning

An extreme heat warning is issued when extremely dangerous heat conditions are expected or occurring.  Avoid outdoor activities, especially during the heat of the day. If you must be outside, be sure to drink plenty of water and take frequent breaks in the shade. Stay indoors in an air-conditioned space as much as possible, including overnight. Check on family and neighbors. 

A heat advisory is issued for dangerous heat conditions that are not expected to reach warning criteria. Stay in a cool place, especially during the heat of the day and evening.

Extreme heat warning Austin, San Antonio

An extreme heat warning is in effect for parts of Central Texas, including San Antonio and Austin, from noon until 8 p.m. CT on Thursday, June 18. Heat indices are expected to reach 118 degrees in some areas on Thursday, with the heat continuing into the weekend.

Feels-like temperatures in Austin and San Antonio will be 116 degrees on Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

Extreme heat warning South Texas

An extreme heat warning is in effect for all of South Texas from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. CT on Thursday, June 18, as heat indices are expected to reach a scorching 125 degrees.

"Little to no relief is expected tonight through Friday night. Make sure to check on the elderly, vulnerable populations, livestock, and pets to ensure they have access to cool locations and water," the National Weather Service said.

Heat advisory Houston, Dallas

A heat advisory is in effect for the Houston area, including Galveston, from 11 a.m. CT on Thursday to 10 p.m. CT on Friday. While high temperatures will reach 95 degrees, feels-like temperatures will rise to 114 degrees.

A heat advisory is also in effect for all of North and Central Texas on Thursday afternoon. Heat index values will be between 105 and 112 degrees, leading to dangerous heat if precautions are not taken, the National Weather Service said.
