Apple users will have more control over Liquid Glass with iOS 27

Apple users will soon have more control over how Liquid Glass design appears on devices.

During its keynote presentation at Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on Monday, June 8, Apple announced users will be able to further customize the Liquid Glass interface the tech giant announced last year.

Under iOS 27, the new software Apple announced at the conference, the default Liquid Glass interface further diffuses background content to create more depth with foreground content, Shubham Kedia, Apple human interface director, said during the presentation.

As part of the update, users with iOS 27, which will roll out this fall, will have the ability to use a new slider scale in the Settings app, which ranges from "Ultra Clear" to "Fully Tinted," Kedia explained. So users who enjoy Liquid Glass can make it more apparent and users who prefer the older Apple interface can get something more like what they are used to.

In addition to more user control, Liquid Glass is expanding into app design. Each Apple app, under iOS 27, features a Liquid Glass appearance.

What is Liquid Glass?

Unveiled at the 2025 WWDC, Liquid Glass is a translucent feature that reflects and refracts its surroundings, like glass, while "dynamically transforming to hep bring greater focus to content," according to Apple.

The Liquid Glass interface interacts with buttons, sliders, text, media controls, tab bars and navigating apps on Apple products.

When are the new Liquid Glass updates available?

The new customizable Liquid Glass interface is available with iOS 27, available for public beta in July and to the general public later this fall.

Reactions to the Liquid Glass design

When Liquid Glass rolled out, some Apple users embraced it while others voiced a dislike for the new design. The more prominent concerns were about readability of notifications and the distortion of the image behind a squiggly, bubble-shaped app outline.

"The new liquid glass looks abysmal and is a perfect example of focusing on form/prettiness/design over of functionality/readability/practicality like, what are we doing here," one X user wrote in a June 2025 post.

Others believed the new design would have not made it past the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.

"Steve Jobs had very famously said that design was how it works, not how it looks ... his thoughts on Liquid Glass would have been interesting," one X user wrote, referencing a famous quote from the founder.
