Watch: NASA releases footage of spectacular solar flare

NASA released a spectacular video on Sunday from its Solar Dynamics Observatory of a flare erupting from the sun.

According to NASA, solar flares are powerful bursts of radiation, and, if intense enough, can disturb the atmosphere in the layer where GPS and communications signals travel.
