Who will Paraguay face in round of 16 of World Cup?

Updated June 29, 2026, 8:24 p.m. ET

Paraguay pulled off a shocker on Monday, June 29, ousting four-time World Cup champion Germany in a penalty shootout in the round of 32.

This victory marked the first for Paraguay in the World Cup knockout stages since it reached the quarterfinals of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

For Germany, this is the third consecutive disappointing exit from a World Cup since it won the tournament in 2014. Germany had gone at least as far as the quarterfinals in 15 consecutive World Cups (1954-2014) before crashing out in the group stages of the previous two World Cups and the round of 32 in 2026.

Looking ahead, Paraguay's path to for a quarterfinal return could be very difficult.

France was the runner-up at the 2022 World Cup after winning the tournament — the nation's second World Cup title — in 2018. Sweden reached the quarterfinals in the 2018 World Cup, but did not qualify for the 2022 tournament in Qatar.

While France cruised to a first-place finish in Group I, Sweden was one of eight third-place finishers to advance to the round of 32.
