With the World Cup expanding to its largest field in tournament history, more nations than ever will fall short of lifting the coveted golden trophy when the final whistle blows in a few weeks at MetLife Stadium.

The first wave of exits comes in the days ahead, as the original 48‑team field shrinks by a third and down to 32 teams.

Several teams have already been eliminated mathematically, and more will join them in packing their bags and returning to their home countries by the time group‑stage play wraps up on Saturday across all host sites.

The knockout stage begins Sunday, June 28 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California between the runner-ups from Group A and Group B. The round of 32 will commence on Friday, July 3 with the round of 16 immediately starting the next day.
