The Carolina Hurricanes are one win away from the franchise's second Stanley Cup title after they dominated the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 5 for a 3-2 series lead.

More important is who scored in the 4-2 win on Thursday, June 11.

Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal did as usual, scoring for the fifth game in a row and the sixth time in the series to tie an NHL record shared by four Hall of Famers.

The Hurricanes also got three goals from their first line, which had been relatively quiet in the playoffs.

Andrei Svechnikov scored on the power play in the second period for his second goal of the series and then Sebastian Aho ended a five-game goal drought. Svechnikov had another power-play goal in the third period as Vegas uncharacteristically got into penalty trouble.

"This is the biggest win in my life, personally," Svechnikov told reporters. "Thank God, we won that game, and all our focus right now ... is we got one more win to do here."

The Hurricanes will be in position to clinch their first Stanley Cup title since 2006 on Sunday, June 14, in Las Vegas. Teams that win Game 5 when the Stanley Cup Final is tied 2-2 have won the title 20 out of 27 times, with 16 clinching in Game 6.

The Golden Knights "probably" will be without William Karlsson, coach John Tortorella said. Karlsson left Game 5 with an apparent arm injury.

Things were looking good for the Golden Knights when they opened the scoring in the first period on a goal by slumping Pavel Dorofeyev. But Staal tied the game.

“You look at the first period who got us back into it, Jordo, so you can take a breath and say, ‘No damage done,'” Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour said. “I can’t say enough about him.”

Dorofeyev scored in the third period to pull Vegas within two goals, but goalie Brandon Bussi and the Hurricanes shut down a late Vegas power play to seal the win.

The goalie and his teammates aren't getting ahead of themselves.

"This series, we've been trailing a lot," said Bussi, who made 23 saves to win his second consecutive start. "We have to keep that mindset. We need to be hungry. We're going there for Game 6 and we're probably going to see the best version of them."

Tortorella vows the team will force a Game 7.

"We'll be back here," he said. "We're just going to do it in a different order."

Third period underway

3-1 Hurricanes. They've outscored the Golden Knights 10-3 in the third period this series.

Second-period analysis: Hurricanes 3, Golden Knights 1

The Golden Knights had ruled the second period in the first four games with a 9-1 edge in goals. Not this game. The Hurricanes outscored them 2-0 and more important was who got the goals. Andrei Svechnikov and Sebastian Aho had struggled to score in the playoffs and they both connected. The Hurricanes outshot Vegas 10-5 in that period and they have been the stronger team in the third period in the series. But don't forget that every game has featured a comeback from two-goal (or more) deficit to tie the game.

Hurricanes score: Sebastian Aho breaks through

Taylor Hall slow to get up

Brayden McNabb cross-checks him. Taylor Hall gets up slowly and skates off. No penalty called.

Second period underway

Score is tied 1-1. Vegas has outscored Carolina 9-1 in the second period in this series. The Golden Knights have nearly two minutes of a power play to start the period. Vegas shows good movement but doesn't score.

First-period analysis: Hurricanes 1, Golden Knights 1

Pavel Dorofeyev got the scoring underway with his first goal in seven games and his first point in six games. Jack Eichel made a nice pass to pick up only his third point of the final. But the game is tied because Jordan Staal continues his tear. He now has six goals in the final as once again, he hurts the Golden Knights by getting loose in front to tip in a shot. Shots are 8-5 Vegas. The Golden Knights will be on a power play to start the second period. They connected in the first period.

Golden Knights go on power play

K'Andre Miller puts the puck over the glass with 5.8 seconds left in the first period. That's two delay of game penalties for the Hurricanes in his game. The penalty will carry over into the second period.

Why isn't Frederik Andersen dressing?

Coach Rod Brind'Amour told ABC he wanted the goalie to rest up in case he's needed later in the series. Pyotr Kochetkov is backing up Brandon Bussi.

Jordan Staal ties another Hall of Famer

He's the first to score in the first five games of the Stanley Cup Final since Montreal Canadiens' Yvan Cournoyer, a Hockey Hall of Famer, in 1973. according to ABC.

Hurricanes score: Jordan Staal ties game

He's in front and tips in a pass from Nikolaj Ehlers. That's a goal in all five games of the final and six total. John Tortorella said Staal had been killing the Golden Knights in front he does it again. Hurricanes 1, Golden Knights 1

Stanley Cup Final schedule

Why Game 5 is so important

When a best-of-seven Stanley Cup Final is tied 2-2, the Game 5 winner goes on to win the title about 75% of the time (20-7; .741). That's 15-3 (.833) when the home team win and 5-4 (.556) when the road team wins.

In the 27 previous instances, the Game 5 winner clinched the championship 16 times in Game 6 and four times in Game 7.

The Game 5 loser has gone on to win seven times.

John Tortorella not concerned about Carter Hart

Golden Knights goalie Carter Hart has given up four goals in each of the first four games of the Stanley Cup Final. Asked if he was concerned, coach John Tortorella said, "No, not at all."

Hurricanes mum on Game 5 starting goalie

Brind'Amour didn't announce his starting goalie before Game 4 and he didn't before Game 5, either. Brandon Bussi started and won Game 4 in his first start of the playoffs. He was in the starter's net during Thursday's morning skate.

Frederik Andersen update

The Hurricanes goalie didn't practice with the team again on Thursday, but coach Rod Brind'Amour said he skated before other players showed up.

"As far as the lineup, everybody's available," he said. "That's all I'm going to talk about."
