NBA veteran Malik Beasley indicted as part of alleged sports betting scheme

June 29, 2026, 11:33 a.m. ET

NBA free agent Malik Beasley has been indicted on federal gambling charges related to a wide-ranging sports betting scheme, according to a news release from U.S. District Court in the Eastern District of New York obtained by the Detroit Free Press.

In a filing Monday, June 29, Beasley and five others are accused of working together to affect the outcome of NBA games and make money off of related bets.

"As alleged, the defendants turned professional basketball into a criminal betting operation, bribing then-NBA player Malik Beasley to fix his performance in multiple games in order to place fraudulent wagers, enrich themselves and cheat legitimate sportsbooks," said Joseph Nocella Jr., United States Attorney for the EDNY.

Beasley, a veteran guard who has played for seven teams in his nine NBA seasons, is expected to surrender to federal officials sometime this week, ESPN reports.

Beasley is specifically charged with wire fraud conspiracy, bribery in sporting contests, honest services wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy, according to the news release.

Beasley's attorney, Steve Haney, told the Free Press − part of the USA TODAY Network − that Beasley and his team "look forward to defending all charges."

Beasley was investigated last year regarding allegations involving gambling related to NBA games and prop bets. Two months later, his attorneys told ESPN he was no longer a target of the federal probe.

While Beasley was apparently cleared of any wrongdoing involving bets on other sports, he was still being investigated in relation to some suspicious prop bets placed during the 2023-24 NBA season. That probe led to the 2025 arrests of former Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups and Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier.
