Tilman W. Stuhlinger: An Expert in Optical Design and Analysis

With more than 45 years of experience in optical engineering, Tilman W. Stuhlinger, PhD, has established himself as a distinguished figure in his field. For this reason, Marquis Who’s Who has honored Dr. Stuhlinger for his expertise in optical design and analysis with inclusion in its biographical volumes. Building foundations for the next steps in optical engineering, he continues to make an impact.
An Early Interest in Optics
Dr. Stuhlinger's interest in optics was sparked by his father, who worked for NASA by planning experiments to be performed during space missions. After interacting with experts from the Lunar and Planetary Sciences Lab and the Optical Sciences Center, his father felt that Dr. Stuhlinger might enjoy a career in optics. When Dr. Stuhlinger assembled a slide projector as a child, his father became certain of his potential, later encouraging him to pursue an education in the field.
Overcoming Academic StrugglesÂ
While Dr. Stuhlinger initially struggled during his time in academia, his professors at Vanderbilt University helped guide him toward better study and work habits, culminating in his attainment of a Bachelor of Science. Those same habits sustained his later pursuits in graduate school and beyond. Today, Dr. Stuhlinger attributes much of his success to their support.
As a result, Dr. Stuhlinger earned a Bachelor of Science at Vanderbilt University in 1975 and a Master of Science at the University of Georgia in 1979, both in physics and astronomy. He subsequently completed a master’s degree in optical science at the Optical Sciences Center in 1981 and a Doctor of Philosophy in optics and optical sciences at the University of Arizona in 1984.
A Distinguished Career
Following the completion of his PhD, Dr. Stuhlinger joined Ruda Optical Inc. as a part-time employee. With this experience, he worked at a local company in Switzerland from 1984 to 1986 before joining Talandic Research Corp. as a staff engineer. By 1994, Dr. Stuhlinger returned to Ruda Optical Inc. as its vice president. For the past 31 years, he has proved instrumental in developing its optical designs.
Dr. Stuhlinger has gained a reputation for tackling intricate systems, ones that few others would attempt. Most notably, he built a display for a business jet system that had to fit around various structural components of an airplane. Additionally, he designed a phased array telescope, which achieved a larger field of view than others could at the time, showcasing a unique approach. Today, Dr. Stuhlinger holds six patents and is actively developing an eye surgery system to improve current models.
Civic and Membership Involvement
Outside of his career, Dr. Stuhlinger is involved in several civic and membership organizations. Since 1984, he has been an active part of the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE), and he currently volunteers at a local planetarium’s open house events. He also regularly reviews journal papers, serving to contribute to the dissemination of optics knowledge.
Plans for the FutureÂ
Moving forward, Dr. Stuhlinger’s main goal is to continue working for Ruda Optical Inc. while taking time to share his wealth of knowledge and experience with younger engineers. He recognizes their potential as the future of the company and of optics, and has made it his mission to support their growth and development. As he mentors these young engineers, Dr. Stuhlinger hopes they will carry his legacy in optics forward.
