AI for Everyone: Dr. Steve Munkeby’s Quest for a More Practical Understanding

The world is increasingly being shaped by artificial intelligence (AI), and Dr. Steve Munkeby is on a mission to help people better understand and utilize it. As an educator, author and the founder of NextGen Publications LLC, he works to make AI clear and practical for a wide range of people, from academics and advanced students to the elderly who want to integrate AI into their everyday lives.
Education and Early Interests
Dr. Munkeby earned a Bachelor of Science in computer science from the University of Montana in 1977, a Master of Science in systems management from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, in 1983, and a Doctor of Management in organizational leadership from the University of Phoenix in 2007. He has always been drawn to new technology, with his interest in math and science starting with the moon landing in 1969. Eventually, it led to a long career in the aerospace industry and the military complex. Later, his experience with advanced systems set the groundwork for his academic and writing career.
Today, as an author and founder of a company that guides writers through the publication process of books and journal articles, Dr. Munkeby is focusing his attention on the growing field of AI. Through NextGen Publications, he is dedicating himself to bridging the gap between new technology and practical applications.
AI for All Ages
Dr. Munkeby notes that while most people know about AI, many are not sure how to use it. As a result, Dr. Munkeby has written books that aim to fill this gap by offering clear ways to get better involved.
One set of books explores advanced topics and future thinking in the AI arena. Titles such as “Faculty in the AI Era – Rethinking Teaching, Supervision, and Academic Integrity” and “Beyond Google: How to Perform Research Using Generative AI” offer insights into the AI process for students and professionals looking to improve their research and analytical skills in the tech-driven world. "Developing Life Thinking Skills" encourages critical thinking in the quickly changing technological landscape.
Another part of Dr. Munkeby’s work is a large collection of books designed to help individuals over 55 engage with AI. Each book focuses on a specific topic, such as health, managing finances or travel, and it uses questions to encourage more hands-on learning. The idea is that by asking AI real-world questions, people can learn how technology can help them in different areas of their lives. One example is a book that provides questions for planning a trip to Europe, letting the reader interact with AI to find relevant information.
In addition to his AI guides, Dr. Munkeby has written a guide, “From Camouflage to Corporate: Breaking the Code of Military Transition Using Generative AI,” that offers support to military personnel transitioning to civilian life. It provides tools and methods to help veterans translate their military skills into terminology that civilian employers understand, and it can also help with resume content and interview preparation.
Looking Ahead
Dr. Munkeby credits his success to his enduring passion for his work. For the foreseeable future, he plans to grow NextGen Publications LLC by publishing more books and supporting other authors. His five-year goal is to continue educating people on the practical uses of AI through his dedication to lifelong learning and helping others succeed in the evolving technological world. Outside of work, he enjoys ballroom dancing, reading and writing. Having served as a coach for his son’s soccer team over two decades ago, he continues to find the energy of youth in competition in not only academic spheres but also in recreational competition.
