Cal Riley: Promoting Compassionate Leadership for the Modern Workplace

Cal Riley has lived a life of personal hardship, battle-tested leadership, and genuine compassion. As a combat veteran, entrepreneur, and author of Entrepreneurial Compassion, he helps others lead with authenticity and purpose. A Lesson in Trust 

In 2013, Riley was serving in the United States Military, and his unit had plans to deploy to the Middle East. As Riley expressed in his book, everyone was worried about whom they could trust in the operation. Recognizing the impact on morale, he decided to develop a new battle drill based on the simple principle of watching each other’s backs. Before deploying, his unit went to a range to rehearse the drill. 

“This one drill improved morale dramatically,” Riley wrote in Entrepreneurial Compassion. “The lesson was, ‘I’m going to watch your back, and you’re going to watch mine…’ Most importantly, it was the leader of the team showing compassion for the men in his unit by saying, ‘This will not happen to you. Not on my watch.’” 

Building a Life as an Entrepreneur 

This example of leading with integrity inspired Riley to apply his hard-earned lessons to entrepreneurship. In less than ten years, he transitioned from special operations command to running his family’s business and building a family of his own. Despite working 90-hour weeks and facing burnout, the support of his wife and two kids kept Riley going. 

Facing Tragedy and Finding a Way Forward 

In 2023, Riley experienced a loss that changed the lens through which he viewed life. This moment marked the starting point of his journey with entrepreneurial compassion and became the reason he wrote his book. Through this personal struggle, he found the tools necessary to move toward success. 

While facing burnout, Riley developed new entrepreneurial strategies and built a strong leadership team to drive growth. In a sense, he reclaimed his life through this process. Today, Riley leverages his lived experience to coach leaders through common leadership mistakes and complex challenges by focusing on clarity, accountability, and sustainability. In Entrepreneurial Compassion, he shares these same lessons with the world. 

“In reflecting on my life,” Riley shared, “I realized that the times when I and my coaching clients were most successful were times when we harnessed that inherent drive that entrepreneurs have [while being] compassionate at the same time… My work is to help entrepreneurs harness that drive with a compassion for others.”
