Sousa Design Architects Celebrates 25 Years of Innovation and Creating Experiences in Hospitality Design
For 25 years now, Sousa Design Architects has redefined the hospitality industry with its visionary approach to architecture, interiors, and environmental graphics. Based in Boston, the firm has successfully completed hundreds of projects, ranging from intimate restaurants to expansive commercial spaces, earning its place as a leader in hospitality design across North America.
Founded in 1999 by star designer Stephen Sousa, the firm began with a focus on restaurant design during a time when economic opportunities were quite limited. Stephen leveraged his early experience with iconic projects in Cambridge and as an in-house architect for Boston restaurateur Charlie Sarkis. Recognizing a gap in the market, Stephen set out to create a full-service design firm that would blend architecture, interiors, and graphic design under one roof—a one-stop shop for hospitality clients.

Sousa Design’s holistic model is the cornerstone of its success. Clients benefit from seamless collaboration, as the firm oversees every aspect of a project, from initial concept to final construction, and even procurement of furnishings and artwork. Stephen reflects on this unique approach, stating, “Our clients value having all their design needs met under one roof. It’s about creating a cohesive vision—one where every detail is thoughtfully considered, whether it is the building’s layout, the texture of fabrics, or the placement of artwork. This model was created to have a harmonious and efficient execution.”
This integrated approach allows Sousa Design to foster collaboration with clients at every stage, utilizing cutting-edge technologies like virtual reality walkthroughs and detailed renderings. These tools bring projects to life long before construction begins, ensuring clients are fully immersed in the design process.
The hospitality landscape itself has evolved significantly over the past 25 years, with increasing consumer demand for authenticity, sustainability, and versatility. Stephen notes how the firm has adapted to these shifts, “In the 90s, restaurants were often theme-driven, like Planet Hollywood theme or Rainforest Café. Today, the focus is on food quality, authenticity, and creating a natural, welcoming environment. Our designs now incorporate authentic materials like oak and other woods, subtle finishes, and indoor plants to reflect these values.”
Dennis Greenwood, Principal and Stephen’s trusted partner for 15 years, adds, “The industry has moved toward lighter, fresher aesthetics that align with farm-to-table dining and sustainable practices. This shift must be reflected in everything from the lighting to the choice of finishes.”

What truly sets Sousa Design apart is its collaborative culture. The firm’s team of 19 designers is united by a shared commitment to excellence, with each member bringing their own expertise to the table. Dennis plays a crucial role in ensuring the firm’s operations run smoothly, complementing Stephen’s creative leadership. “Stephen focuses on the upfront design, and I help implement it to ensure it’s built to the highest standards,” states Dennis. “It’s a partnership built on trust and shared vision, which has been key to our success.” This dynamic duo has led the firm to work on high-profile projects such as the creation of Wahlburgers as well as work with a long list of celebrity chefs, including Gordon Ramsay; a portfolio that speaks to the caliber of their clientele.

As Sousa Design Architects celebrates its 25th anniversary, the team is not resting on its laurels. Stephen and Dennis see this milestone as a steppingstone to even greater achievements, “This is just the beginning. We’re constantly evolving, finding new ways to push the boundaries of design and deliver exceptional experiences for our clients.” From intimate neighborhood bistros to globally recognized brands, Sousa Design Architects truly remains at the forefront of hospitality design—bringing visions to life, one project at a time.
