CerebrumX Reconfigures Vehicle Analytics Platform to Combat Disparities in Data Sources 

While the connected vehicle industry has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years, the transition to a fully connected landscape is not yet complete. As a result, there is a great deal of heterogeneity in vehicle data gathered, with many fleets containing older-model vehicles that do not collect the same level of data as their newer-model connected counterparts. Data for older vehicles usually come from companion smartphone apps as well as dongles installed into the vehicle's OBD-II port, and these disparate forms of data collection often result in varying amounts and quality of data gathered. 

AI-driven automotive data management company CerebrumX predicts that this situation will last for at least the next five years. In order to address this current state of vehicle data, CerebrumX has reconfigured its proprietary Augmented Deep Learning Platform (ADLP) to integrate data from smartphone applications, and aftermarket devices such as dongles and dashcams. This ensures that it will be able to collect comprehensive data across a wider variety of vehicles and it is able to standardize that data into a form that is easily usable by its clients, which include insurance companies, fleet operators, and electric vehicle makers. 

“We have expanded our platform to accept data from a variety of input sources,” says CerebrumX COO Sumit Chauhan. “The platform has always been able to gather data from multiple feeds, including dongles and smartphone apps, but our sole focus was on the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) side of things on the cloud. However, we realized that there was a large degree of heterogeneity in vehicle data, so we reconfigured our platform to take other sources into account. It took a lot of work to build a platform that can process data into a homogeneous form despite a heterogeneous external environment.” 

This comes after Pioneer Corporation, a global market leader in mobility products, announced that it is investing in and forming a business alliance with CerebrumX. Through this strategic partnership, Pioneer and CerebrumX will expand their collaborative business globally, starting with North America and Japan, and aim to provide a one-stop connected service platform that supports both connected and non-connected vehicles. 

According to Chauhan, the improved data gathering capabilities of CerebrumX's platform will greatly benefit insurance companies, which insure a wide variety of vehicles. Previously, insurers' pricing algorithms assign drivers a risk score that is predominantly based on the zip code they live in, their driving incident history, as well as personal information such as educational level and marital status. However, Chauhan says that this method is rudimentary, and it is now being replaced by historical and real time data usage-based pricing models, which look at a driver's history over the past few months and analyze their driving behavior, such as acceleration, deceleration, cornering, braking, and many other parameters. 

CerebrumX's ADLP uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to analyze that data, either in real time or offline, and provides those inputs to insurers, which will help them better calculate the insurance premium to charge each driver. 

Chauhan says CerebrumX's strong data analysis capabilities are due to its close relationship with OEMs and other partners that work with connected vehicle technologies. This provides CerebrumX with unparalleled access to around 300 parameters of data gathered by a connected vehicle at 1Hz frequency. From this large volume of data collected, CerebrumX can isolate the specific parameters needed by its clients and charge them only for the parameters they choose to purchase.

CerebrumX's founding team, myself included, are people who come from a very technology-driven automotive background, so we have a deep understanding of the challenges the OEMs face in coming up with these solutions. We help the OEMs process data more elegantly, more efficiently, and more cost-effectively,” he says.
