McCain unhappy with sportswriter's vote on NL MVP

Arizona Sen. John McCain is not buying a local sportswriter's explanation for apparently dissing Paul Goldschmidt, one of his favorite ballplayers.

Goldschmidt, first baseman for the Arizona Diamondbacks, finished second in voting for the National League's most valuable player. The award went to Andrew McCutchen of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

"Hard to believe anyone wouldn't vote for one of AZ's finest," McCain said on Twitter about Arizona Republic writer Nick Piecoro's decision to vote for McCutchen instead of Goldschmidt.

Students of McCain's Twitter feed know the Republican is a homer when it comes to sports and cheers on the Arizona teams and players with a fervor. He's a big fan of the player known as "Goldy," who had a breakout year and led the National League in home runs and RBIs.

McCain included a link to Piecoro's column, in which the sportswriter explained that McCutchen was "just a little bit more valuable" than Goldschmidt, whom he watched closely all season.

But here's the truism for any journalist who writes about sports, politics or anything else: "There are certain realities you have to accept in this job. One of them is that you're never going to please everyone," Piecoro wrote.
