Tropical Storm Cristina continues to spin in the Pacific Ocean and is currently drifting westward toward El Salvador, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Forecasters said in an early morning June 10 advisory Cristina is currently located about 100 miles south-southeast of San Salvador with maximum sustained winds near 40 mph with higher gusts.

The storm is expected to linger offshore of El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua Wednesday and then approach the coast of El Salvador Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Forecasters said slight strengthening is possible through Wednesday night, with weakening forecast on Thursday after Cristina moves inland.

Cristina is expected to produce 4 to 8 inches of rain, with maximum totals of 12 inches, across coastal portions of Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala through Thursday morning, with life-threatening flooding and mudslides possible, especially in areas of steep terrain.

A tropical storm warning is in effect for Puerto Sandino, Nicaragua northwest to the Guatemala/El Salvador border, according to the NHC.
