3 shot, 2 dead, in apartment building murder-suicide, NYC police say

NEW YORK − An apparent murder-suicide on Jan. 22 left three shot, two fatally, in a New York City apartment building, police said.

The shooting occurred in the affluent Spuyten Duyvil neighborhood of northwestern Bronx, at a co-op building perched atop a cliff. The 55-year-old man suspected of shooting two others is a Port Authority police officer, a union official confirmed. Police haven't released the suspect's identity.

Just before 8 a.m., police responded to a call of multiple shots fired inside the building, the New York City Police Department said. On arrival, police found the 55-year-old man shot in the head, a 59-year-old woman shot in the head and an 86-year-old woman shot in the face.

Medical first responders pronounced the 55-year-old man and 59-year-old woman dead on scene, NYPD said. The older woman was transported to a New York City hospital, where police described her in critical but stable condition.

Police said the dead man is the suspect in the shooting, with a firearm recovered. No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing, police said. NYPD declined to answer questions about the relationship between the three and the weapon used in the shooting.

The Port Authority Police Benevolent Association confirmed the suspect was a 23-year member of the agency’s police force. Union spokesman Bob Egbert said the man's name hasn’t been released.

"It’s a sad story," Egbert said. "That’s all it is."

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the regional transit and infrastructure agency, referred questions to NYPD.
