Mikaela Medina , 14, was bitten by a shark in Galveston, Texas. ‘It could’ve been a lot worse,' she said.

Shark attacks are scary, even when they're harmless.

Fourteen-year-old Mikaela Medina found that out this weekend when she went swimming in Galveston, Texas and did not even realize she had been bitten.

When she was waist deep water, "it just felt like something bumped into my back. I was like, 'this could be a shark,'" Medina told KHOU. She did not see the shark or feel any pain, but her mother told her there were teeth marks on her back.

"She's the one who told me I had gotten bit," said Medina. "After she told me I was bleeding I started crying."

A family physician friend was able to treat Medina on the spot.

"It's really crazy," said Medina. "I didn't think that could ever happen and it could've been a lot worse."
