Will California’s toilet paper warehouse fire impact Washington DC?

A massive fire at a toilet paper warehouse in Ontario, California, is believed to have destroyed everything inside the 1.2 million-square-foot facility.

It's now possible consumers could face adverse consequences following the six-alarm blaze at the warehouse leased by personal care and hygiene giant Kimberly-Clark.

What toilet paper does Kimberly-Clark make?

Kimberly-Clark produces Scott and Cottonelle, two of the most popular toilet papers on the market.

It also makes Kotex feminine hygiene products, Kleenex facial tissues, Viva paper towels and Huggies diapers.

Will there be a shortage of toilet paper in DC?

Tuesday's fire could lead to supply problems, but according to Diana Gomes, a Bloomberg Intelligence senior industry analyst, the issues may only extend to the West Coast.

Gomes said the fire "risks West Coast supply shortages for more than 3% of sales."

Kimberly-Clark said in a statement it was "working through mitigating any short-term disruptions" from the blaze.

"Kimberly-Clark's supply chain network is designed for continuity during disruptions and mitigating actions are already in motion," the company said. "The company has activated its coordinated response plans and is working closely with local logistics providers to maintain continuity for customers."
