Cardi B says she sees 'the difference in Baltimore and DC.' What is it?

After performing to sold-out arena crowds in Baltimore and Washington DC this month, rapper Cardi B says she now knows the difference between the two DMV-area cities.

Cardi B is touring for the first time in six years, and apparently the Baltimore and DC crowds left a strong impression, prompting the Grammy-winning artist to share her thoughts on X about their distinct vibes.

"Okay I definitely see the difference in Baltimore and DC," the rapper posted Thursday before providing her explanation in a follow-up post.

"DC gives Harlem... Baltimore gives Brooklyn," she wrote, comparing the cities to New York City boroughs.

She's likely referencing the cultural differences among the cities, comparing DC to the historically Black cultural hub of Harlem, which has urban energy but is somewhat gentrified.

Her comparison of Baltimore to Brooklyn may be a nod to Brooklyn's gritty image and its reputation for raw, unapologetic authenticity.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore leaned into the comparison and praised Baltimore's identity.

"Two cities, two vibes... Baltimore just hits different, respectfully," Moore said in response to Cardi B's post.

Cardi B's comparison reignited conversations about a long-standing cultural rivalry between Baltimore and DC, cities located just 40 miles apart but often viewed for having their own distinct identities and cultures.

The distinction is often reflected in everything from nightlife to local traditions, reinforcing the perception the cities operate in their own cultural lanes, with residents quick to point out what makes their city unique.

Cardi B took in the nightlife in both cities, reportedly attending an afterparty Wednesday at Throw Social in DC with NFL wide receiver Stefon Diggs. Last weekend In Baltimore, she was seen with rapper and TV personality Tesehki at Ikonic Live.
