We tried Spendee. Is it the right budgeting app for your money?'

Spendee works well for people who’ve tried budgeting before and quit because it felt like too much upkeep.
  • Spendee is a budgeting app designed for users who want a simple, visual overview of their spending.
  • The app is best for beginners; dedicated budgeters who want detailed, plan-every-dollar budgeting or investment tracking may find it too basic.
  • Key features include bank account synchronization, shared wallets for splitting expenses, and smart budgeting with spending alerts.

Not everyone wants to plan out every dollar before they spend it. Some people prefer that level of detail and structure, while others simply want a quick read on where their money already went. Spendee is built for that second group. The app turns bank transactions, cash spending and cryptocurrency holdings into colorful, easy-to-scan charts instead of dense ledgers.

The USA TODAY team tested Spendee to see how it works, what features stand out and whether it’s worth paying for once you outgrow the free version.

Spendee at a glance

  • Best for: Simple or beginner budgeting
  • Free version? Yes, with limited features
  • Pricing: Free to $5.99 per month
  • Key feature: Bank account synchronization and shared wallets

What is Spendee?

Spendee is a budgeting app that tracks your income and spending by pulling data from bank accounts, e-wallets and even crypto wallets into a single dashboard. Once you connect your accounts or set up a wallet manually, Spendee organizes your transactions into colorful graphs and charts to give you a quick, big-picture view of your cash flow.

The ease of use makes Spendee click for people just starting. There’s no learning curve to climb before you get something useful out of it. And the Basic plan isn’t a stripped-down demo, either — you still get a full spending overview and secure data storage without paying a cent.

Key features of Spendee

Bank account synchronization

Spendee connects to more than 2,500 banks, credit unions, e-wallets and crypto wallets worldwide. On Premium, those connections sync automatically about once a day. On Plus and Basic, you’ll enter transactions manually instead.

Some banks that use two-factor authentication, a text code or QR code scan at login, may not connect automatically. In these cases, you’ll need to refresh manually instead, by pulling down the transaction list in the app or clicking “sync account” on the web dashboard.

Shared wallets and finances

Say you and your roommate are splitting rent, utilities and the occasional Costco run. Spendee lets you set up a single wallet for that and invite your roommate via email. From there, you can both log and edit the same transactions. It doesn’t matter who originally logged them.

Setting one up requires a Plus or Premium plan, but only for the person who creates the wallet. If that’s you, then your roommate can use it on the Basic plan with no upgrade needed. Currently, Spendee doesn’t support connecting a shared bank account directly. So each of you must link your own bank or card, and those transactions will flow into the shared space from there.

Smart budgeting

Setting a budget in Spendee is straightforward. Pick a category, like dining out. Then set a dollar limit, say $300 a month. We set one up for groceries on the Basic plan, and the app updated our progress in real time with every purchase. You won’t have to wait until the end of the month to find out you overspent, either. Spendee sends an alert once you’ve used up 75% of your budget, then again at 90%, so you can course-correct before you hit your limit.

The app also calculates a daily spending allowance, so you always know how much you can spend that day without blowing your budget. Basic users are limited to one budget at a time, while Plus and Premium users unlock unlimited budgets across as many categories as they want.

Customizable tags and labels

Spendee doesn’t hand you a fixed list of categories and call it done. You can build your own, and that’s what we ended up doing with “Food & Drink.” We split that into “pizza,” “takeout,” and “coffee” instead of dumping every meal into one bucket.

Tagging “takeout” separately from “groceries” means you’ll notice if one creeps higher than the other, instead of finding out weeks later when you’re reviewing the month as a whole. Catching spending patterns like this early can help you adjust your habits before it turns into a budget problem.

AI receipt scanner

One of Spendee’s more fun features is Magic AI Scan, which turns a photo of your receipt into a finished transaction. Use your phone to take a picture of that grocery run or dinner out, and the app fills in the price, category, labels and notes for you.

The scanner also reads receipts in multiple languages, which comes in handy if you’re shopping while traveling abroad. This is a Premium-only feature, so Plus and Basic users will still need to enter transactions.

Spendee pricing

Spendee uses a three-tier structure, with each paid tier unlocking more automation and flexibility than the last.

Here’s what that looks like:

Every plan includes a 7-day free trial.

Spendee pros and cons

Pros:

  • Clean interface: Spendee skips the spreadsheets and turns your spending into colorful, easy-to-scan charts and graphs.
  • Multi-currency support: It’s a great pick for travelers or expats, since transactions convert automatically across currencies without extra math.
  • Lower cost than most competitors: Premium runs just under $6 a month, which is less than what other apps like PocketGuard and Monarch Money charge for similar features.

Cons:

  • Restrictive free tier: Couples or families hoping to set up shared wallets will need one person on a paid plan.
  • Can’t link investment accounts: Spendee doesn’t offer dedicated investment tracking, so you’ll need a separate tool for stocks, retirement funds or other holdings.
  • No live support: Help is limited to email or an in-app contact form, so don’t expect an instant chat or phone option if something goes wrong.

Spendee vs. other budgeting apps

Recommendation: Who Spendee is best for

Spendee works well for people who’ve tried budgeting before and quit because it felt like too much upkeep. If you’ve downloaded a finance app in the past only to abandon it within a week, Spendee’s lower-effort, visual format may actually stick.

It’s also a good match if you and a partner or roommate have been splitting bills through text messages, sticky notes or a shared spreadsheet nobody updates. Spendee replaces that with a single shared wallet for joint costs while keeping the rest of your finances separate.

Who should skip it

If you’re a dedicated budgeter who needs deep investment tracking, debt payoff planning or strict, every-dollar budgeting, Spendee will likely feel too surface-level. Other budgeting solutions, such as You Need a Budget (YNAB) or Origin, are better equipped to handle more complex financial planning needs.

Bottom line: Is Spendee worth it?

For most people who just want a clearer picture of their spending, Spendee is often worth it. We tested the basic plan for a week, and logging expenses by hand turned out to be quicker than expected, with no glitches or friction. Connect a wallet, and you’re tracking right away.

Whether a paid plan makes sense depends on how much patience you have for manual entry. If jotting down a coffee run or grocery trip doesn’t bother you, the Basic plan will probably serve you fine. But if you’d rather check one app than three, Premium’s automatic bank syncing may be worth the few dollars a month it costs to get your time back.

FAQs

Is Spendee free?

Yes, Spendee is free if all you need is basic manual tracking with one wallet and one budget. However, automatic bank syncing, multiple wallets and cryptocurrency connections require a paid Plus or Premium plan.

Is Spendee good for beginners?

For most first-timers, yes. The charts are simple enough that you don’t need to learn budgeting jargon to use the app. Many new users start by entering their expenses by hand, then turn on bank syncing once they’re comfortable.

Is Spendee trustworthy?

Yes, Spendee is trustworthy. It uses bank-level encryption and read-only access so it can’t move money or make payments.

Is Spendee better than Rocket Money?

It depends on what you need. Rocket Money is better if your priority is canceling subscriptions and lowering bills. Spendee is a cheaper, simpler option for everyday budget tracking.

Is it hard to cancel Spendee?

No. Canceling Spendee is straightforward through your Apple or Google Play Store account (rather than inside the app). Both platforms let you cancel in a few taps.

Does Spendee track investments?

No. Spendee can sync crypto wallets and let you log investments manually through its Wallets feature, but it doesn’t offer stock performance tracking or dividend monitoring.
