What is 'Millionaire for Life'? What to know about new lottery game

Jan. 16, 2026, 4:33 p.m. ET

A new lottery game is set to become available in more than two dozen states across the country, and it's promising to make its winners millionaires for life.

Aptly named “Millionaire for Life,” the new game was announced in a news release from the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) on Thursday, Jan. 15. Apart from the Millionaire for Life, the MUSL also oversees the Powerball, Lotto America and other lottery games.

The new game is expected to replace the two long-running games, Cash4Life, which paid winners $1,000 a day for life, and Lucky for Life, which gave winners $25,000 a year for life.

Although those games are on the way out, the new game is set to increase the winnings to a grand prize of $1 million a year for life and a second-tier prize of $100,000 a year for life, according to the news release.

“Millionaire for Life offers premier ‘for-life’ prizing that players, especially younger players, have gravitated toward,” Tom Seaver, Millionaire for Life product group chair and senior director of the Colorado Lottery, said in a statement.

Here is what players need to know about the new game.

How is the Millionaire for Life game played?

MUSL said more information on how to play Millionaire for Life will be released online on Feb. 12; however, both the Montana and Wyoming lotteries offered more details on how the game is set to be played.

According to both state lotteries, the game will have two pools of numbers, similar to the Powerball and Mega Millions. The first will have numbers between 1 and 58, and the second will have numbers between 1 and 5. Drawings will select five numbers from the first pool and one from the second pool, named the Millionaire Ball.

Matching all five numbers from the first pool and the number from the second pool will net the winner $1 million a year for life, while matching only the five numbers will net the winner $100,000 a year for life.

When will the Millionaire for Life game be played?

According to the MUSL, tickets for the new game will cost $5, with drawings for the game scheduled to occur daily starting on Sunday, Feb. 22, at 11:15 p.m. ET.

Where will the new lottery game be played?

Officials said that tickets for the new game will be available in the following states: Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Virginia, Vermont, West Virginia and Wyoming.

Officials say that tickets are expected to be offered in New York at launch but are currently awaiting regulatory approval.
