Dish has $213M in Q2 income as revenue per user rises

Dish Network said Wednesday its satellite TV-Internet business rebounded from a loss a year ago to register $213 million of net income in the second quarter as it gained more Internet subscribers and customers paid more per month for the TV service.
The Englewood, Colo.-based company, which competes nationally with local cable companies and DirecTV, also reported $3.69 billion in total revenue for the quarter ending June 30, up 6% from a year ago.
Dish activated about 656,000 new pay-TV subscribers during the quarter vs. 624,000 in the year-ago period. But accounting for the customers who left the service during the quarter, its pay-TV subscriber base fell by about 44,000 in the quarter. The company closed the second quarter with 14.053 million pay-TV subscribers vs. 14.014 million a year ago.
The average revenue per user for pay-TV totaled $84.15 during the quarter, up from $80.81 a year ago.
Its Internet service unit added 36,000 subscribers -- after accounting for those who left -- in the second quarter, bringing its Internet subscriber base to about 525,000.
Shares were up 3.1% to $64.10 in afternoon trading.
