Miley Cyrus' new open-letter writer? Sufjan Stevens

Miley opened the Oct. 5 episode of 'Saturday Night Live' with her tongue - of course!

Singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens is the latest artist to jump on the open-letter-to-Miley-Cyrus bandwagon.

Stevens took to his Tumblr page on Monday to ding Cyrus for poor grammar, specifically for misusing the word "laying" in the lyrics for her new single #GetItRight, from Bangerz.

"Dear Miley. I can't stop listening to #GetItRight (great song, great message, great body), but maybe you need a quick grammar lesson. One particular line causes concern: 'I been laying in this bed all night long.' Miley, technically speaking, you've been LYING, not LAYING, an irregular verb form that should only be used when there's an object," Stevens wrote.

Of course, that grammar point confuses a lot of people, as Stevens points out: "Even (author William) Faulkner messed it up." (Or did he? See below.)

To his credit, Stevens' missive is much more playful than the series of angry letters that singer Sinead O'Connor recently wrote to the pop sensation.

(A bit less playful, perhaps, is this entry from a copy editor at VICE magazine, which points out grammar and stylistic errors in Stevens' post.)
