Soldier's surprise return during sister’s prom photo shoot

May 22, 2026Updated June 5, 2026, 5:22 p.m. ET

When 17-year-old Deonna Goode was getting ready for prom, she had no idea the night would include a surprise she’d remember forever.

Just 24 hours earlier, Deonna’s older brother, Pvt. Antwan Walker, secretly flew home to Kings Mountain, North Carolina, from his Army base in Texas. He had been away for four months and planned to surprise their mom, Kristen Byrd.

After the initial shock of his return wore off, Byrd had an idea.

“We decided we would surprise his sister at her before‑prom photo session,” Byrd said. “Deonna and her brother have the most loving and tight bond, and she adores her big brother from when they were babies on up."

On prom day, Deonna’s grandmother was conducting the photo shoot when Byrd started recording the emotional moment.

"[Deonna] was in such shock and disbelief,” Byrd said. “The best part was that we had no idea [Antwan] would be able to be here for this special milestone in her life. It made her first prom day absolutely perfect.”
