When are Amazon Fresh stores closing? Some will convert to Whole Foods

Amazon is closing 72 of its Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go stores, converting some into Whole Foods Markets.

Amazon announced on Tuesday, Jan. 27, that it will close 57 Amazon Fresh and 15 Amazon Go stores, in-person grocery and convenience stores operated by the retail giant. The closures come as Amazon pivots its focus to open more than 100 new Whole Foods Markets in the next few years, the company said in a news release. Amazon acquired Whole Foods in 2017.

Though the physical Amazon Fresh and Go stores will be no longer, grocery orders will continue to be available online through Same-Day Delivery and Amazon Now, which offers 30-minute delivery in select markets.

The last day of operation for Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go stores is Feb. 1, according to an Amazon statement obtained by USA TODAY. The exception to this is locations in California, which will remain open a bit longer to comply with state regulations.

How many Amazon Fresh and Go stores will be converted into Whole Foods?

As of Jan. 27, Amazon did not have a specific number of Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go stores that will be converted into Whole Foods Markets.

Part of the expansion includes the introduction of Whole Foods Market Daily Shop, a smaller storefront intended for convenience and neighborhood grocery shopping, according to a news release. This format of store was introduced in 2024 with five locations in New York City and New Jersey.

Where is Amazon opening new Whole Foods?

As of Jan. 27, Amazon did not have details to share about the exact number of Whole Foods Markets that would open in the coming years, or where.
