First look at new 'Harry Potter' TV series revealed

March 24, 2026, 1:31 p.m. ET

Welcome back to Hogwarts.

HBO has dropped the first official photo from "Harry Potter," the new television series adaptation of the books by J.K. Rowling.

The picture, released on Tuesday, March 24, shows Harry at Hogwarts, wearing a Gryffindor cloak and holding his broom. There is snow on the ground in the photo, and other Hogwarts students are seen lined up in front of Harry.

While posting the photo on Instagram, the official "Harry Potter" account teased there is more to come on Wednesday, possibly indicating the first trailer is near. "Tomorrow ⚡️," the caption read.

This was the first official photo showing a scene in the "Harry Potter" show, though HBO had previously released images of the cast in costume on set.

Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter in HBO's "Harry Potter" TV show.

A trio of newcomers stars in "Harry Potter," with Dominic McLaughlin taking on the title role opposite Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. Other cast members include Nick Frost as Hagrid, John Lithgow as Dumbledore and Paapa Essiedu as Snape.

Casey Bloys, HBO & Max Content chairman and CEO, previously said the new "Potter" adaptation would allow for a "deep dive into each of the iconic books that fans have continued to enjoy for all of these years." Each season of the show is expected to adapt one of Rowling's original seven "Potter" books, which were previously turned into eight feature films. Rowling is involved in the series as an executive producer.

Daniel Radcliffe, the original Harry Potter in the movies, has given his blessing to the series and wished McLaughlin well in taking over the role.

"They contacted me just before [the cast was] announced," he told ComicBook.com. "They let us know they were about to announce them. All I did was say, 'I would love to write the boy playing Harry. When you have his name, if you could send me his name… I don't need anything in advance, just let me know when it is appropriate to write to him to congratulate him and wish him luck.'"

When will 'Harry Potter' premiere?

HBO hasn't announced a specific premiere date for "Harry Potter," but it's expected to debut in 2027.
