Apple unveils iPhone 16e: A cheaper smartphone option with new features

Apple announced the fourth edition of the budget-friendly iPhone on Wednesday. The new iPhone 16e is $599, according to an Apple news release. The new smartphone will be available for pre-order on Feb. 21 and in stores on Feb. 28.

The new iPhone 16e features an all-display design with a notch housing the front camera and Face ID technology. A new exterior action button, featured on the side of the iPhone 16e allows users to access a variety of tools and options with a click.

The Apple 16e runs on Apple’s latest-generation A18 chip. The 6-core CPU is up to 80% faster than the A13 Bionic chip on iPhone 11, according to Apple.

iPhone 16e features the now standard USB-C charging port Apple adopted with the iPhone 15.

The iPhone 16e comes in matte black and matte white. iPhone 16e silicone cases, from Apple, will come in winter blue, fuchsia, lake green, black and white.

The iPhone 16e features Visual Intelligence, which allows users to point the phone’s camera at places and things in their surroundings to learn more information.

The iPhone 16e include Apple’s satellite features, which were introduced in the iPhone 14, including Messages via satellite to text friends and family.

The satellite feature will also allow the Find My app to share a user's locations if they are traveling off the grid, according to Apple.

The iPhone 16e includes Crash Detection, which Apple claims can “detect a severe car crash and automatically dial emergency services if a user is unconscious or unable to reach their iPhone.”

Apple also says the Emergency SOS via satellite can allow users to connect with emergency services.
