Juneteenth gatherings in the US commemorate emancipation

Utica, N.Y. held its Juneteenth Celebration a day early at Chancellor Park on Saturday, June 18th, 2022. Juneteenth is the anniversary of June 19, 1865, when the news slavery was outlawed finally reached Galveston, Texas. Utica's longstanding annual celebration goes back to when African American Heritage Day was celebrated in August in the park.

The Rosalyn Walton Education and Enrichment Services, Inc. coordinated its 2nd Annual Juneteenth Community Festival at the 13th Avenue Dream Center in Bradenton on Saturday June 18, 2022. The event hosted over 50 food, clothes, and craft vendors as well as local businesses and non-profits. Over 350 visitors were in attendance. According to Dr. Sharon Jefferson, coordinator of the Juneteenth Community Festival: "Juneteenth reminds us that it takes all of us to continue the fight for racial justice and equity. We also aim to support small and minority owned businesses. We are already looking forward to planning a greater celebration next year!"

Events like these bring the community together to learn about our heritage."
