Deadly earthquake hits Philippines

The state seismology office said it had recorded 130 aftershocks since a 6.5-magnitude quake struck Surigao city and nearby areas of Mindanao island on February 12, killing six people and injuring more than 200 others, with more than a thousand homes destroyed or damaged. The Philippine Archipelago lies on the 'Ring of Fire', an area of seismic faults surrounding the Pacific Ocean where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur frequently.
