College basketball transfer portal rankings: Top 40 available players
For most college basketball teams in the current landscape, future championships are won in April and May when rosters are being built.
The transfer portal opened at midnight after Michigan's 69-63 national championship win over UConn on Monday, April 6. Over 1,500 players have already entered, according to multiple reports.
The two best teams in college basketball this season, Michigan and UConn, featured numerous transfers on their respective teams. The Wolverines start five transfers, whereas the Huskies' best player this season, center Tarris Reed Jr., is also transfer.
Transfers by conferences: ACC | Big Ten | Big 12 | SEC | Big East
The NCAA approved a shortened transfer portal window for the 2026 season, with players allowed to officially enter from April 7-21 on the men's side.

The old transfer portal window lasted 30 days and started after the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament, putting teams that advanced in March Madness at a disadvantage. As soon as the buzzer sounded at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis for the national championship, the race was on for the top available players.

The two-year starter has two seasons of eligibility remaining.
Robert Wright III enter transfer portal
Last year, Robert Wright III was one of the biggest names to enter the transfer portal (and one of the biggest earners from switching schools) after leaving Baylor following a promising freshman season to go to BYU. Now, he's on the move from the Cougars after one season and will instantly be one of the most coveted guards available.
Last season, Wright averaged 18.1 points and 4.6 assists per game while shooting 46.7% from the field and 41% from 3-point range. He was second on the team in scoring, behind only potential No. 1 overall NBA Draft pick AJ Dybantsa.
PJ Haggerty enters transfer portal
Kansas State's PJ Haggerty is in the transfer portal, according to multiple reports on April 7. The 6-foot-4 guard ranked fourth nationally averaging 23.4 points per game for a Wildcats squad that went 12-20 and finished second-to-last in the Big 12 standings.
A rising fifth-year senior, Haggerty's next school will be the fifth of his career. He redshirted after playing in six games at TCU as a true freshman, before playing one season each at Tulsa, Memphis and Kansas State.
Regardless, he'll be one of the most sought-after players in the transfer portal due to his scoring prowess.
James Nnaji to enter transfer portal
One of the more breathlessly discussed players in college basketball last season is set to be on the move. Baylor big man James Nnaji plans to enter the transfer portal after an eventful and abbreviated season with the Bears in which he averaged 1.4 points and 2.1 rebounds per game.
Nnaji was the No. 31 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft and was playing professionally in Europe before he joined Baylor, which announced on Christmas Eve that he had been added to the roster. The addition of the 21 year old drew widespread criticism, including from high-profile coaches like Tom Izzo and John Calipari.
Donnie Freeman plans to enter transfer portal
Syracuse forward Donnie Freeman is planning to enter the transfer portal after a sophomore season in which the 6-foot-9 Washington, D.C. native averaged 16.5 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. The move comes after the Orange made a coaching change, replacing Adrian Autry with program legend Gerry McNamara.
Freeman was a five-star recruit and the No. 13 prospect in the 2024 class, according to 247Sports' Composite rankings.
Denzel Aberdeen enters transfer portal
The transfer portal has room for all — even those seemingly out of eligibility. Kentucky guard Denzel Aberdeen has entered the transfer portal after averaging 13.5 points and 3.4 assists per game last season for the Wildcats. It's unclear whether he has any eligibility remaining, though, as he played for three seasons at Florida, including on the Gators' 2025 national championship team, and one at Kentucky. He played just 12 games as a freshman at Florida in 2022-23, but that surpasses the NCAA's threshold that allows players to compete in up to 30% of their team's games to earn a redshirt.
For his career, Aberdeen is averaging 7.7 points per game and shooting 35.1% from 3-point range.
Justin Pippen to enter transfer portal
Cal guard Justin Pippen is transferring from Cal after one season. The 6-foot-3 sophomore, who began his career at Michigan, averaged 14.2 points, 4.6 assists and 1.9 steals per game for the Golden Bears last season, though he shot an inefficient 37% from the field. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining.
And, yes, if his last name looks familiar, it's because he's the son of former NBA superstar Scottie Pippen.
Gavin Doty commits to Syracuse
Siena star Gavin Doty is following Gerry McNamara to Syracuse, he announced via Instagram on April 7. The 6-foot-5 sophomore averaged 18 points with 6.9 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game this season, leading the Saints to the NCAA Tournament.
Doty scored 21 points in Siena's 71-65 loss to Duke in the first round.
Purdue lands multi-year Princeton starter
Purdue already has its first transfer signed, as it announced Princeton forward Caden Pierce signed with the program on April 7, the first day of the window. Pierce, the Ivy League Player of the Year in 2023-24, redshirted last season to finish his degree at Princeton before transferring as a graduate transfer.
Pierce committed to Purdue in February, and chose the Boilermakers over UConn, Duke, Louisville and Gonzaga, according to ESPN. He averaged 16.6 points with 9.2 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game in 2023-24, before his per-game averages dipped to 11.2 points with 7.2 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 2024-25.
Aiden Sherrell plans to enter transfer portal
Alabama sophomore forward Aiden Sherrell is planning to enter the transfer portal, according to multiple reports. The 6-foot-11 big man averaged 11.1 points with 6.2 rebounds per game as a first-year starter at Alabama, along with 2.2 blocks per game.
A former five-star recruit, Sherrell was the No. 23 player and No. 5 center of the 2024 class, according to 247Sports' Composite. Sherrell can also shoot from outside, making 33.8% of his 2.4 3-point attempts per game.
Bryson Tiller to enter transfer portal
Kansas redshirt freshman forward Bryson Tiller is entering the transfer portal, according to multiple reports April 6.
Tiller averaged 7.9 points with 6.1 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game this season, starting 31 of 35 games for the Jayhawks. The former blue-chip recruit has three seasons of eligibility remaining and will be highly sought-after, thanks to his starting experience and 6-foot-11, 240-pound frame.
John Blackwell to enter transfer portal
Wisconsin guard John Blackwell, the No. 3-ranked player available by USA TODAY, announced April 6 that he's entering the transfer portal while going through the NBA draft process.
The All-Big Ten third-team selection this season averaged 19.1 points with 5.1 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game and is a two-year starter for the Badgers. He scored 22 points with 10 rebounds in Wisconsin's upset loss against High Point in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
It's a brutal loss for Wisconsin, which is also losing leading scorer Nick Boyd. Blackwell will be among the most sought-after players available with two seasons of high-level scoring production in the Big Ten.
