Heat vs. Hornets score, highlights from NBA Play-In Tournament game

Updated April 14, 2026, 10:57 p.m. ET

And it's the Charlotte Hornets who will live another day.

First, Charlotte came back in the final minutes of regulation to send the game into overtime. Then, LaMelo Ball scooped in a game-winning layup Tuesday, April 14, to eliminate the Miami Heat from playoff contention in the first game of the NBA Play-In Tournament.

The Hornets won the game, 127-126, and will now face the loser of the East Play-In game between the Orlando Magic and Philadelphia 76ers for the chance to earn the No. 8 seed in the NBA Playoffs.

Hornets guard Coby White laced a game-tying 3-pointer with 10.8 seconds left in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 114. Heat guard Tyler Herro's subsequent would-be game-winning attempt hit rim, sending the game into overtime.

The Hornets struggled to score from the perimeter all night long, shooting just 18-of-56 (32.1%) from 3-point range. The Heat dropped into a zone in the fourth quarter, but the NBA’s two leading 3-point shooters this season, Kon Knueppel and LaMelo Ball, combined to shoot just 2-of-22 (9.1%) from deep.

Knueppel scored just 6 points. He remained on the bench on the team’s final offensive possession in regulation, when they were down by 3, and in overtime.

The Heat got massive contributions in the second half from Davion Mitchell (28 points) and Andrew Wiggins (27), as Miami played most of the game without center Bam Adebayo, who was ruled out of the game with a lower back injury.

Heat vs. Hornets highlights

End OT: Hornets 127, Heat 126

In a wild finish, the Heat erased a five-point deficit to take a one-point lead with 10.7 seconds left to play, but Hornets guard LaMelo Ball scooped a running layup past Jaime Jaquez Jr. to give the Hornets a one-point lead.

Miami's Davion Mitchell sprinted down the floor to try a layup, but the Hornets blocked it to seal the game and eliminate Miami.

Amazon Prime broadcast suffers technical difficulties

When the first game of the Play-In Tournament was at its most pivotal moment, the Amazon Prime broadcast went totally dark.

Late in overtime, the broadcast feed of the Miami Heat-Charlotte Hornets game suffered technical difficulties, going dark for close to a minute.

End Q4: Heat 114, Hornets 114

Heat guard Tyler Herro's attempted game-winning 3-pointer clanked off the rim and these two teams are going to overtime. The loser will be eliminated from playoff contention.

Coby White ties it

Hornets guard Coby White swished an improbable 3-point shot off of an inbounds play to tie the game at 114, with 10.8 seconds to go.

Miami will have the chance to win the game off of the inbounds.

Crazy stat for Charlotte

The Hornets are just 13-of-43 (30.2%) from beyond the arc so far, and LaMelo Ball and Kon Knueppel are an abysmal 2-of-20 (10%) from deep.

Despite that, the Hornets have responded with a 7-0 run to tie the game at 102 with 4:14 left.

Heat go on big run to turn game around

Miami is on a 12-0 run and has taken back the momentum in this game. The Heat dropped into a zone defense, which has flustered Charlotte to some extent; the Hornets have missed each of their 4 3-point attempts.

Davion Mitchell has been huge for Miami, pushing the ball up the floor and blowing past defenders on drives to the rim.

With 7:25 left to play, Miami leads 97-93.

End Q3: Hornets 89, Heat 83

The Hornets took control late in the third.

Charlotte ripped a 15-4 run toward the end of the third, as backup guard Coby White came alive in the third. White has 16 points, 14 of which came inside the final 4:05 of the quarter. White laced big 3 after big 3, as Charlotte is carrying significant momentum headed into the fourth quarter.

As a reminder, the team that loses this game will be eliminated from playoff contention; the team that wins will face the loser of the East Play-In game between the Magic and 76ers, for the chance to be the No. 8 seed in the playoffs.

Miami will continue to be without Bam Adebayo (lower back), who didn't play in the third quarter and has been ruled out for the rest of the game.

The Heat defense fell apart, and Miami will need much more scoring from Tyler Herro (12 points) and Norman Powell (6).

Bam Adebayo injury update

Heat captain Bam Adebayo (lower back) was not on the floor to start the second half. Jaime Jaquez Jr. started in his place, with Kel'el Ware remaining as Miami's center in Adebayo's absence.

Adebayo is not even seated on the bench with his teammates and appears to remain in the locker room.

End Q2: Heat 54, Hornets 52

Buckle up for what should be an intriguing second half.

The Heat and Hornets have both been pushing pace up and down the floor and playing with intensity. Yet, even without Bam Adebayo, who suffered a lower back injury earlier in the quarter, Miami hung in.

Adebayo didn't return to the floor after suffering the injury with 10:58 left to play in the half. Despite that, Miami has been attacking the paint to try to create easier offense. The Heat hold a 30-22 advantage in points in the paint, though Charlotte is outworking Miami on the glass; the Hornets are winning the rebounding battle, 33-26.

The Heat have gotten balanced contributions, though Davion Mitchell and Andrew Wiggins each have 10 points to lead the team.

Charlotte, on the other hand, has gotten massive games from two players, LaMelo Ball and Miles Bridges.

Ball scored 17 points and Bridges added 15, with a team-high 6 rebounds. Aside from Ball and Bridges, the rest of Charlotte's starters are just 3-of-13 (23.1%) from the floor.

Bam Adebayo shaken up

Early in the second quarter, Heat captain Bam Adebayo was shaken up when he took a hard fall on the court.

During the play, Adebayo was trying to save a ball from going out of bounds when Hornets guard LaMelo Ball took Adebayo's foot out from under him. Adebayo lost his balance and then fell on his backside, landing on his tailbone. Adebayo fell without the ability to brace himself. He remained down in discomfort for a minute or so, but eventually walked off.

He got up on his under his own power, though he walked gingerly into the locker room for observation.

The Heat later issued an injury report and listed Adebayo as questionable to return with a lower back injury.

End Q1: Hornets 26, Heat 24

The Heat cooled off significantly after their hot start, and Charlotte took advantage of an 11-2 run later in the period to pull ahead. The Hornets, however, went cold late in the period, setting up what should be an interesting, fast-paced remainder of the game.

Miami had been looking to pound the ball into the paint, trying to take advantage of its size. Early in the game, the Hornets didn't have an answer for that, and the Heat got some lower-effort buckets. The Hornets, though, adjusted and closed off gaps when Miami tried to drive into the lane, forcing Miami to settle for perimeter shots.

The Heat shot just 2-of-8 in the first from 3-point range.

The Hornets, meanwhile, had huge quarters from Miles Bridges and LaMelo Ball, who combined to score 19 points in the quarter. Elsewhere, it was more of a struggle, as rookie sensation Kon Knueppel failed to hit any of his 5 field goal attempts.

The Hornets missed their final 7 attempts to close the quarter. Andrew Wiggins leads all Miami players with 7 points.

Heat vs. Hornets gets underway

Both teams have come out with intensity and purpose, and both are hitting their shots. Miami has hit 5-of-7 shots (71.4%), while Charlotte has gone 4-of-6 (66.7%).

Miami is pushing tempo, as the Heat have an early 11-10 lead at the first media timeout. LaMelo Ball has 7 early points.

"The Hornets have been competing at a higher level and covering consistently, two things bettors need to consider. They have covered in five of their last six games as a favorite. ... The Heat have been on fire offensively, but they've had season-long issues defensively. Miami has allowed at least 117 points in 6 straight games and is 0-3 against the spread in that span as an underdog."

Arizona Republic: Heat 110, Hornets 107

"The Hornets have home-court advantage for this game, but the Heat won the season series, 3-1. Bam Adebayo and Miami are more than capable of pulling off the upset against Charlotte in the NBA Play-In Tournament game."

BetMGM: Hornets likely win and cover

BetMGM's model predicts a Hornets win over the Heat with 80% confidence and projects Charlotte to cover the spread with 70% confidence.
