The World Health Organization has labeled the Zika virus and its link to complications in newborns as an international health emergency.
Aedes mosquitoes become infected when they feed on a person who has the virus. They then spread the virus to others through bites.
Also may be spread by: blood transfusions; a pregnant woman to her fetus; a man to his sexual partners (because the virus lasts longer in semen than blood).
People usually don’t get sick enough to require hospitalization. The virus is rarely fatal.
If you are infected, avoid mosquito bites for the first week of your illness.
Linked to a birth defect known as microcephaly, which results in small heads and brain damage in infants.
Possible link to infant eye abnormalities and Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a neurological disorder that can cause temporary paralysis.
No vaccine to prevent or treat Zika; no treatment for microcephaly.
Avoid mosquitoes. Aedes mosquitoes bite mostly during the daytime; stay inside and use window and door screens
If outside, wear long-sleeve shirts and long pants; use insect repellents.
EPA-registered repellents recommended, particularly ones labeled to protect against Aedes mosquitoes. (No repellents should be used in babies younger than 2 months.)
Important: Steer clear of standing water (in buckets, animal dishes, flower pots). Mosquitoes lay eggs and congregate in and near pools of water.
